How to seal a wooden birdhouse painted in acrylic?

My son has used acrylic craft paint to decorate a birdhouse cedar wood for his dad for Father's Day. It was very nice and I need help on how to close the nesting box and we will be able to hang outside for birds, hopefully use. I wood sealer Thompson's wood furniture outdoors, but must be repeated annually. So I am concerned that special sealer fade and ruin the paint job in time. Poly I is for indoor use.
