Taking Great Humming Bird Pictures

Humming birds are among the most beautiful and beloved birds in the world. There are many different kinds of humming birds in the world. Species include: Allen's, Broad-billed, White-eared, Magnificent, Buff-bellied, Xantus, Black-chinned, Calliope, and the beautiful and popular Ruby-throated. The kind of humming birds you can attract will depend on your geographic location. If you want to capture humming bird pictures, there are some simple ways to do so.

First, you'll need a way to bring the humming birds to your yard. Try planting a humming bird garden! Not only will the birds be attracted by the color and shape of the flowers and come to eat, you'll have a beautiful background for your photos. Great flowers and shrubs to plant include: Red Columbine, Hollyhock, Butterfly Bush, Bee Balm, Azalea, Honeysuckle and Morning Glory, to name a few! Look for flowers and shrubs with bright red or fuschia blooms that are trumpet shaped. Not only will a garden like this attract humming birds, it will bring beautiful butterflies as well.

It's a good idea to hang some humming bird feeders in or close to your garden. Humming bird feeders are bottle-shaped apparatus that feature tiny holes from which the birds can extract the nectar. Fill your feeder with either a store-bought nectar solution or a simple mixture of one part sugar to four parts water. Remember, humming birds love red -- so if you can find a red feeder, by all means do so.

Now that the stage is set for humming birds, you'll need to make sure you have a good camera. These days, many people prefer to use digital cameras so they can see the photos they've taken before deciding to save or discard. Digital cameras also make it easy to share and print your photos. When choosing a digital camera, remember that the megapixel count will designate the picture quality. Consumer grade cameras start around a measly 2 megapixels and go up to around 6 megapixels. Past 6 megapixels, you're dealing with more professional grade cameras. Try to select a camera with a fast shutter speed and image stabilization for best results.

So, you've got all the elements in place for great humming bird pictures -- the garden, the feeders and the camera. Now all you have to do is wait patiently!
