All About The Dixie Hummingbirds

The Dixie Hummingbirds are the longest running gospel group in the world today. After all, they've provided the world with their own brand of music for a whopping seventy years! First appearing on the scene in 1928, the Dixie Hummingbirds remained on the scene until 2001. There is no other group in the world, gospel or otherwise, that can say that. The Dixie Hummingbirds are the stuff legends are made of -- they've spent seventy years doing what they love, and doing what they're best at. That's something that we all can strive for in our own lives!

Because of their amazing duration, the Dixie Hummingbirds are recognized as pioneers in the gospel quartet world. In 1999, music legend Stevie Wonder gave congratulations to the Hummingbirds on their amazing history and great music. Some of the most popular songs by this group include: Loves Me Like a Rock, Trouble In My Way, and Jesus Walked the Water. The Dixie Hummingbirds released a 70th Anniversary Celebration CD in 1999 which features other music legends like Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Mavis Staples, Shirley Caesar, Isaac Hayes, Vickie Winans, Deniece Williams and Howard Hewitt. Anyone who loves great gospel should check out this fantastic CD!

The current Dixie Hummingbirds members are Ira Tucker, Paul Owens, Howard Carroll, Carl Davis and William Bright. In 1938, the Hummingbirds made their very first recordings for the well-known Decca record company. At that time, the lineup was a bit different. James Davis was the tenor lead, Barney Parks added vocals, Wilson Baker was the 2nd tenor, and Jimmy Bryant provided the bass. Although the lineup changed over the years, the feel-good brand of gospel that the Hummingbirds are known for has not.

If you're a gospel fan who's never heard of the Dixie Hummingbirds, then you owe it to yourself to run out and buy some of their works. You'll love the smooth vocalizations and praise-filled lyrics of this amazing group. Not only has this group made great strides in the gospel world, they've made great strides for African American singing groups around the world. There's never been a longer running music group -- in the gospel genre or any other for that matter!
